A dream come true. A weekend I will remember forever. Awestruck. Teary eyed. Is this real? I don’t know if I even have words to convey to you all what a long weekend in Salzburg meant to me, much less being there for the 50th anniversary of the release of my favorite movie, “The Sound Of Music!”
I so clearly remember Mom carting us kids from Fredonia to Buffalo, NY to watch this movie when I was 13 years old. I remember sitting in Shea’s trying to stifle my tears so my sister and brother wouldn’t laugh at me. I remember the heart string tugging story line, the gorgeous scenery, the beautiful Julie Andrews, but most of all I remember the music! I remember….the sound of music, and it has stayed with me all these long years. I memorized all the words to the songs from Edelweiss to Climb Every Mountain. I struggled to play the songs on the piano. And 50 years later, there I was in Salzburg, Austria for this momentous anniversary. Sitting on a bus with my beloved who arranged this weekend for my birthday. Traveling from location to location to see where the movie was filmed. Walking the footbridge across the Salzac River and climbing the steps in the Mirabelli Garden where Do-Re-Me was filmed. Sitting in the very Church in Mondsee where the wedding of Maria and Captain von Trapp was recorded. Touching the Gazebo where Maria and Capt. von Trapp shared their first kiss and hearing “I Must Have Done Something Good,” playing in my head. Strolling through St. Peter’s Cemetery where the family hid behind tombstones the night of their escape. I am so grateful for this experience of a life time and so thankful for the man who took me there. “Somewhere in my wicked, miserable past I must have done something good.”
I enjoyed sharing Salzburg with you and hope you enjoyed my ramblings! Thank you all for coming along with me on this journey.
