There is absolutely nothing I dislike about a Smoothie. I love whipping these up for breakfast using pretty much whatever fruits I have in the kitchen. Except Apples…..for some reason Apples just don’t seem right in a Smoothie. But I may have to try one just to prove myself wrong!
The Smoothie I made today uses one of my favorite Tropical fruits, the Mango! Mangoes take me right back to Jamaica. Heat, sunshine, blue sky and exotic fruits that I can never get enough of during that one week vacation. Looking out my window in Bavaria right now, the sky is grey and we have a cold nasty Sleet coming down. Yep…a Mango Smoothie is just what the doctor ordered today!
Years and years ago, I kept hearing about how wonderful Mangoes were. People raved about them. So much so that I went and bought a Mango. I brought it home, cut it up, took a bite and YE GADS, it was horrible!! Tasted like Turpentine! Smelled terrible too. I couldn’t believe anyone would eat a Mango much less rave about how delicious they were. Well…..fast forward 10 years. I was talking to a friend who came from the Island of Trinidad and he was going on about how he loved fresh Mangoes and missed picking these luscious jewels. So, I told him my experience and asked him why he thought Turpentine tasted good. He chuckled, then kindly explained that I had tried to eat a very green, totally unripe Mango! I was then provided a lesson in how to purchase a good, ripe Mango. I was also instructed in the varieties of Mangoes as some are stringy and some just melt in your mouth. Since that time, I have truly become a huge fan of Mangoes and buy them often when in season.
The Mangoes I buy in Bavaria come from India and gee, they have some good ones! Mangoes are ripe when they are soft and “give” when gently pressed. I usually let them sit out for a few days just until they get even softer. They have a thick peel that comes off easily with a knife revealing a gorgeous juicy orange flesh. When fully ripe, they are just a sweet delight! The Mango is so slick and slippery that it’s hard to hold onto so be careful when you’re cutting it up. We don’t want any knife wounds! Mangoes contain one very large white seed or pit. Simply slice around it, then chop the flesh into pieces.
